Not normal
The assignment
Driven by technology and science, it is now possible to eliminate all the “flaws” in our bodies or minds. In doing so, we are all transforming into “perfect” human beings—but is that really the case? This raises the question as to the reason behind this pursuit of perfection: who decides what is perfect, and who determines what is abnormal?
Drawing on the themes explored by the foundation 'Niet normaal' (Not Normal), we will delve into the concept of the individual as something that can be shaped, as well as the pursuit of perfection. What is 'normal,' and who gets to decide?
1. Below, you will find a selection of artists and artworks from the exhibitions of the *Niet Normaal* (Not Normal) foundation. Clicking on the images will reveal the creator, the title of the artwork, and keywords that touch upon its theme. After we have discussed the artworks together in class, you will choose one of the artists featured below. If nothing here appeals to you, or if you would prefer to make your own selection from the *Niet Normaal* foundation’s collection, you can continue your search at: this site.
2. Find a classmate who has chosen the same artist, and work together to gather as much information as possible about the artist, their work, and—most importantly—the underlying theme, using the provided keywords as a guide.
3. What are your own thoughts on this theme? Create a brainstorm using words and/or images.
4. Conceive and create a product (design) or artwork that reflects your thoughts and/or response to the theme. The format is open: draw upon the knowledge you have gained regarding the various art disciplines covered in your CKV (cultural and artistic education) lessons—for example, photography, film, collage, sculpture, model-making, dance, music, or theater. When creating a product, you might consider items such as clothing, furniture, or a game.
5. Determine the group size in consultation with your instructor; this will depend on your ideas for the implementation.
6. In the final week of classes before the exam week, you and your group will present your research and final product based on this theme.
