Assignment description
In groups, you will design a part of the city where cultural diversity is central. Think of a park, a community center, a square or a street where different cultures come together. How can architecture, design and street art contribute to a place where everyone feels at home?
Your final product consists of:
A spatial model of your design.
A street art style artwork that conveys a cultural message.
Phase 1: Research & Concept Development
1. Investigate cultural diversity in the city
How does cultural diversity influence the cityscape?
Which places are important for encounters and collaboration between cultures?
Which architectural and artistic elements can promote inclusivity?* see below…
2. Street Art Research
What forms of street art exist and what is their social impact?
How do street artists use art to highlight diversity and identity?
3. Design a concept
Choose a city district: park, square, community building, street, etc.
Sketch out how this can become an inclusive place.
Determine how your street art plays a role in this.
Phase 2: Execution
1. Build the Model
Use prescribed scale cardboard and .
Think about furnishings, seating, symbols of diversity and community spirit.
2. Create the Street Art
Design a mural, graffiti or mosaic on a scale model of a wall or building in the model.
Use techniques learned in previous lessons
Make sure it conveys a message about cultural diversity.
3. Presentation
Each group presents the model and explains how their design contributes to an inclusive city.
Judgement
Research & Concept (30%) – Clarity of ideas and substantiation.
Model (40%) – Creativity, spatial layout and details.
Street art (20%) – Expression, originality and message.
Presentation (10%) – Clarity and enthusiasm.
We will assess the assignment in class using an assessment form in which the above aspects are included.
